Exhibit: Container Recent Work by Jody Joyner, Assistant Professor of Art at Swarthmore
Friday, October 6,
12 p.m. -
5 p.m. Eastern
List Gallery in LPAC
more information
In Container, consumer product packaging provides Joyner with a primary source of materials, forms, and subject matter. She often begins her inquiries by shredding discarded single-use objects, such as cardboard boxes, to create malleable pulp. She then presses the pulp into plastic objects such as egg cartons, trash cans, and produce baskets, which become found molds. The front room of the gallery features composite structures that incorporate multiple castings from a single mold. The resulting stacked sculptures recall the type of organization found in supermarkets, offices, or other quotidian spaces. Despite her playful interest in mimesis, Joyner’s sculptures are not replicas. She represents durable, mass-produced materials with imperfect, hand-processed matter. Her pulp trash can is porous trash. Her jug is not symmetrical or functional but warped and wryly studded with remnants of an Eggland’s Best® label.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hip Hop turns 50 years this year, with major celebrations around the world. On Friday October 6 (7 PM to 10 PM), Swarthmore College and the Cooper Foundation invite you to spend an evening with Hip Hop legends, scholars, and cultural preservation activists Chuck D, KRS-One, and Wise Intelligent, as well as the acclaimed dance troupe Urban Artistry.
From its Jamaican-infused roots, Hip Hop has become a unique African American art form with global reach and influence, moving beyond music and dance to encompass social, political, cultural, and even religious elements. It has influenced generations of music, dance, and visual art, as well as fashion, television, and movies. Over time, certain elements of its fashion and lifestyle were stigmatized and its aesthetics commercialized, but the true soul and roots remain intact. Hip Hop has served as a voice for the voiceless, a protest against oppression and marginalization, and a way of life that deserves not only respect and celebration but study and reflection.
Chuck D co-founded the group Public Enemy and played with the supergroup Prophets of Rage, won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
KRS-One has been honored by VH-1 and won BET Hip Hop’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Urban Music Awards’ Living Legend Award, and his book ‘The Gospel of Hip-Hop” has been widely studied.
Wise Intelligent is a member of the Poor Righteous Teachers and President of the Rap Snacks Foundation, as well as a scholar who has written the influential book ⅗ an MC: the Manufacturing of a Dumbed-Down Rapper.
These Hip Hop legends will appear with dance troupe Urban Artistry, world famous for its International Cultural Diplomacy initiatives and its cultural preservation advocacy.
